Responsible Gambling: Recognise Problems and Get Help

Gambling is a form of paid entertainment, not a way to earn money and not a solution to financial problems. The odds are structured so that, over time, the operator keeps a share of everything staked. Any session that ends in profit is a short-term deviation, not a pattern you can rely on. If money is the reason you are playing, that is the first sign to stop and look at the situation honestly.
This page exists for two practical purposes: to help you recognise the warning signs of problem gambling in your own behaviour, and to tell you exactly where to get help right now, today.
How to Recognise a Problem
Problem gambling rarely announces itself. It shows up in small, observable behaviours that add up over months. Go through this list and be honest with yourself:
- You gamble with money you have already set aside for rent, bills, or food.
- You return to gambling to recover losses — “chasing” — rather than for entertainment.
- You have borrowed money, or considered borrowing, to continue playing.
- You hide the amount of time or money you spend gambling from people close to you.
- You have tried to cut down or stop, and were unable to.
- You feel restless or irritable when you try to stop.
- You think about gambling when you are not gambling — planning the next session, replaying past ones.
- Gambling has displaced things you used to care about: work, sleep, relationships, hobbies.
- You have used a credit card or borrowed funds to deposit, including indirectly through an e-wallet.
One item on this list is a warning. Several together are a signal to act. Recognising the pattern is not a moral failure — it is information, and information is what lets you make a decision before the situation gets worse.
Tools Available to You on the UK Market
UK gambling regulation gives you a specific set of controls, and you are entitled to all of them.
Age. The legal gambling age in the UK is 18. No form of gambling is legal below the age of 16, and parental permission does not override this law. If you are under 18, you should not be gambling at all.
Deposit limits. Operators must prompt you to set a deposit limit before your first deposit. Set it before you play — not after a losing session, when judgement is already compromised.
Loss limits, session time limits, reality checks and timeouts. UK-licensed operators are required to offer all of these. Reality checks are periodic on-screen reminders of how long you have been playing and how much you have spent. Use them.
Self-exclusion at the casino level. Every gambling business must have its own self-exclusion procedure. Casino-level self-exclusion can be set from one day to permanent.
GAMSTOP. This is the national online self-exclusion scheme. Since March 2020, participation in GamStop is mandatory for all UK online gambling operators. One request through GAMSTOP excludes you from all UKGC-licensed gambling sites for a period you choose: six months, one year, or five years. During that period, operators are required to block your accounts — they are connected to a nationwide database of self-excluded users and must enforce it. You can register at https://www.gamstop.co.uk.
Your money when you stop. You must be able to stop playing at any time and retain your remaining deposit and any winnings earned from that deposit. If an operator refuses to return your funds when you close your account, that is a matter for a complaint — and a reason to check their licence status.
Recent limits. From 9 April 2025, online slots are subject to a £5 per spin limit for players aged 25 and over. From 28 February 2025, remote operators run light-touch financial vulnerability checks when your net deposits exceed £150 in a rolling 30-day period. These checks exist to flag potential harm early, not to spy on you.
Verify before you deposit. Operating without a UKGC licence is a criminal offence in Great Britain. Before you register anywhere, check the operator name or licence number against the UKGC public register of current operating and personal licences, and confirm the listed domain matches the site you are on. An unlicensed site offers you none of the protections described on this page — no enforced self-exclusion, no obligation to return your deposit, no complaint procedure.
Where to Get Help — Now
If anything in the list of warning signs applied to you, use these contacts today rather than "after the next session". All of the helplines below are free of charge and available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

GamStop — https://www.gamstop.co.uk. Register for nationwide online self-exclusion in a matter of minutes.
Calling a helpline does not commit you to anything. You will not be judged, lectured, or signed up to a programme against your will. You explain the situation, and you get information on what your options are — including options you may not know exist.
One Last Thing
Gambling does not fix debt, and no betting strategy turns it into income. If financial pressure is what brought you here, the helplines above can point you toward help with that too — gambling is one of the few things that reliably makes money problems worse, not better.
Deciding to stop, even temporarily, is not a loss. Self-exclusion through GAMSTOP takes minutes. A phone call to 0808 8020 133 takes less time than one deposit. Use whichever comes first.
